Commercial Caladiums - New Varieties

Bates Sons & Daughters works closely with Dr. Zhanao Deng of the University of Florida and selects new varieties to trial every year in the caladium fields. Following are the new UF varieties being offered:

GARDEN WHITE CALADIUMS

A large fancy leaf solid white caladium with black stems. This is a vigorous variety that is spectacular in large pots. It performs well in full sun conditions or shade.

MOONLIGHT CALADIUMS

A solid white fancy caladium with many leaves. It does not need to be de-eyed and makes a nice rounded full pot. Moonlight can be used in all pot sizes and is beautiful in the shady landscape conditions.

TAPESTRY CALADIUMS

A large leaf fancy caladium with a white center, red veins, and green specks on the border. This variety is a tall vigorous caladium that is striking in container combos as well as in the landscape. It is tolerant of full sun or shade conditions. Tapestry was awarded "Best New Caladium" at the Dallas Arboretum trials in 2012. It was also awarded "Best of the Best" and "Favorite Shade Caladium" at the Ohio State University Annual Cultivar Trial in 2013.

SIZZLE CALADIUMS

Sizzle is a strap leaf variety. It does very well in the full sun and is pinkish red with dark burgundy veins. In the shade, it is pink with dark veins. It is shorter that Red Ruffles or Sweetheart and makes an excellent hanging basket or border plant. Do not De-Eye, it has no apical dominance and will be much too short if de-eyed.

CHERRY TART CALADIUMS

A pinkish red strap leaf caladium. This variety is short and very full. It is great for small pots, hanging baskets, or as a border in the landscape. Cherry Tart performs well in full sun or shade.

ROYAL FLUSH CALADIUMS

A deep red fancy leaf caladium with red veins and a green border. This variety has many leaves and makes a very full pot. It performs well in the landscape also and is tolerant full sun or shade conditions. Royal Flush was awarded "Best of the Best" and "Favorite Sun Caladium" at the Ohio State University Annual Cultivar Trial in 2013.

STRAWBERRY STAR CALADIUMS

A white fancy caladium leaf with large red specks. Vigorous with many leaves. This variety is tolerant of full sun or shade conditions. It also performs well in potted plant production or landscape.
